چکیده

We investigate the optimization and evaluation of queries with universal quan-tiication in the context of the object-oriented and object-relational data models. The queries are classiied into 16 categories depending on the variables referenced in the so-called range and quantiier predicates. For the three most important classes we enumerate the known query evaluation plans and devise some new ones. These alternative plans are primarily based on anti-semijoin, division, generalized grouping with count aggregation, and set diierence. In order to evaluate the quality of the many diierent evaluation plans a thorough performance analysis on some sample database conngurations was carried out. The quantitative analysis reveals thattif applicableethe anti-semijoin-based plans are superior to all the other alternatives, even if we employ the most sophisticated division algorithms. Furthermore, exploiting object-oriented features, anti-semijoin plans can be derived even when this is not possible in the relational context.

Attribute-oriented Induction in Ob Ject-oriented Databases

Knowledge discovery in databases is the nontrivial extraction of implicit, previously unknown, and potentially useful information from data such that the extracted knowledge may facilitate deductive reasoning and query processing in database systems. This branch of study has been ranked among the most promising topics for database research for the 1990s. Due to the dominating influence of relat...

Object oriented databases – a natural part of object oriented software development ?

The technology of object oriented databases was introduced to system developers in the late 1980’s. Despite that it is rarely used today. This thesis introduces the concept of object oriented databases as the purposed solution to the problems that exist with the use of relational databases. The thesis points to the advantages with storing the application objects in the database without disassem...

Query Interoperation Among Object-Oriented and Relational Databases

We develop an eecient algorithm for the translation of high-order object queries to rst-order relational queries. The translation utilizes a canonical deductive database as a uniform representation of object-oriented schema and data. Object queries are translated to the canonical deductive database in which they are partially evaluated and optimized, before being translated to relational querie...

A Model of Queries for Object-Oriented Databases

One major source of confusion, and consequent c&icisms, about object-oriented databases has been the lack of a comprehensive model of queries. Although there is a reasonable degree of agreement about an object-oriented data model, few operational systems support a query model for object-oriented databases. In this paper, we present a rather comprehensive query model which is consistent with obj...
